Hawaii
Oahu Island
Tuition: $4,500 (includes roundtrip flight from Williamstown, MA) |
In the center of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii has a very unique ecosystem. Its lush rain forests are home to a wide array of distinct and specialized wildlife that flourished for millions of years without threat of disease or predators. Nicknamed the "gathering place," Oahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest island is home to the majority of Hawaii's diverse population, a fusion of East and West cultures rooted in values and traditions of the native Hawaiian people.
The group will primarily assist Ahahui Malama i ka Lokahin in their conversation and restoration projects at Kawai Nui Marsh. The group will assist in clearing brush and non-native species off of archaeological sites, build trails, and weed and dig out plants and muck in the wetland demonstration pond. The group will also spend time volunteering with local young people and area Boys and Girls Clubs.
Along with service work the group will partake in surfing lessons, snorkeling, visiting historic Pearl Harbor, kayaking, swimming with sea turtles and learning traditional Hawaiian dances.
